A Lower East Side institution since 1914, this is the shop that gave the appetizing counter its name, hand sliced smoked salmon and sturgeon piled onto a fresh bagel with cream cheese exactly the way four generations of the same family have built it. The original shop is counter service only, the sit down cafe a few blocks away serves the same menu with table seating. Either way, the classic bagel with lox and a schmear is the order to start with.
