About

The only Mayan city built directly on the coast, its stone temples still stand on a limestone bluff above a turquoise cove that visitors are free to swim in after the ruins close for the day. El Castillo, the main temple, once worked as a lighthouse for canoe traffic navigating the reef offshore. Go at opening, the site has almost no shade and gets uncomfortably hot and crowded by mid morning.
