Guatape and El Penol Day Trip

A 220 metre granite monolith with a staircase of 700-odd steps built straight up its face, and the reservoir view from the top, a flooded valley studded with green fingers of land, is the reason most people make the two hour drive out from Medellin. The town of Guatape below it does the rest, every building front painted with its own carved and colored relief panel. Climb the rock before lunch, the staircase has almost no shade and gets crowded by midday with tour buses.
